Here is a brief exchange between OBJ and Baldwin discussing challenges faced during the pandemic and what’s on the current horizon:
OBJ: How did you grow your company’s revenue during the global pandemic?
Baldwin swiftly adapted its business strategy in the initial months of the pandemic by pivoting its focus to virtual events like webcasts, virtual meetings, and virtual conferences. Recognizing the evolving needs of our clients, we collaborated closely with them to pinpoint their unique AV and virtual event requirements for sustaining events and corporate communications.
Since there was no established playbook for the virtual event landscape at the time, we decided to be part of making one! Within a remarkable six-month period, we conceptualized, implemented, and launched a cutting-edge simultaneous interpretation and virtual event studio. Tailored to accommodate a diverse range of virtual solutions, our state-of-the-art studio became a pivotal asset for clients during the pandemic.
Navigating uncharted territory, our sales and technical teams invested significant time and effort in crafting and designing innovative offerings to meet the unprecedented demand. Our virtual event studio and service offerings not only ensured business continuity for our clients but the undertaking resulted in Baldwin having two of its most successful years in company history!
OBJ: What was your biggest challenge during that time?
As our virtual business experienced rapid expansion, the demand for unique equipment and skilled personnel grew at an accelerated pace. Global supply chain disruptions compelled us to adopt creative and proactive approaches to securing essential equipment and creating rigorous training for crew members.
Given the novelty of some of the processes and equipment configurations that were now being used, we invested significant time and effort in comprehensive training programs for both full-time and freelance technicians. The training focused on acclimating technicians to our novel operating procedures and software within the new studio space.
Since many of the processes and configurations were new to the industry, lots of research, consultation, and testing were required to get everything just right. By proactively addressing the hurdles in transitioning to a new virtual event environment, Baldwin successfully met the surging demand and positioned itself as one of Ottawa’s leaders in the virtual event space.
OBJ: What is your biggest opportunity post-pandemic?
The biggest opportunity in the AV event world is the burgeoning hybrid event space. Our clients have eagerly embraced the return of live events but the demand for hybrid options as part of these reflects the changing expectations brought on by the pandemic. The conventional approach of constant travel for events became obsolete, giving rise to a new standard hybrid format that is more convenient and seamless for all attendees and presenters.
Exiting the pandemic, our live events business has regained full momentum, our hybrid event business is experiencing rapid growth, and our virtual event studio continues to help make more dynamic and accessible events possible. Baldwin has also expanded its in-house offerings to include creative services that cover everything from pre-event and post-event video production services, motion graphics, and other branding elements to custom video mapping solutions.
This latest service addition has not only addressed a market need but has already fostered repeat business as clients continue to experience the depth and breadth of our capabilities.
